Bits of pink trachea stuck to knives, venomous snakes, disastrous fake fishing trips.....the author had me cheering on a bad guy as he dealt with the even worse guys. This is a fast, action-packed, coming-of-age mystery in which the familiar small-town corruption the teenage protagonists are forced to face is just the beginning. I loved the cowboy ranch-type talk between the two main characters, both teenagers, as they struggle to make sense of the violence and depravity they see in the adult world. I don't know if people really talk like that out west, but it made the characters come to life for me. The minor characters, especially the cops, were also well-developed enough so it was easy to dislike them as much as the main character does. It's well worth your time and money if you like larger-than-life characters, realistic gore, and people who get what they deserve.
