Check them stars out on the lapel. Did ya read his books and find a hero to keep ya safe from the boogieman? Is everyone of the law and not above it? If ol' Joe is guilty as charged will he lie to save his carcass? If he is found guilty is he like the rest of those criminals he loved to dump into Tent City and feed green bologna for breakfast, dinner and supper? Is he gonna wear pink boxers like the other criminals he dealt with? He's a professional and not a teenager caught with 420. But . . . not so fast . . . he could be guilty of a felony. Na, he has sense enough to claim the judges wife was Al Qaeda or something.

Like a wise old man once said . . . "When you start believing your own B.S. that's when you get in trouble. Them stars, national TV and books. Will I think you get it . . . don't you friends?

Robert Bates Shoots Eric Harris - Attitude as the Contributing Factor

We've been considering points of improvement in the Criminal Justice System. Consider this for a moment . . . Robert Bates is dumping cash on the police. He is not adequately trained and at least one Training Officer falsified records because he was afraid. Now the Sheriff and the Captain can't remember anything as they play politics to protect their own skin. Remember folks, this stuff is happening in a neighborhood near you. It's called being human and a uniform doesn't bury these tendencies.

Beatriz Paez Okay, a US Deputy Marshal knocks a cell from a woman's hands; enough said? Nothing illegal about taping this; enough said? 'Oh, the cop was having a bad day'. Next time you're having a bad day damage some one else's property at work and see what happens; enough said?

Good-lord, I tell you, some of the emails I receive. I write two stories about this. I was a cop in a prior life but in the end, . . . it's about believing what your seeing. I don't need a weather man to tell me which way the wind is blowing. Some of you folks out there should stay tuned to the Weather Channel.   

Beatriz Paez has rights . . . or does she? US Deputy Marshal doesn't Think So!

California is strengthening laws to insure the legality of folks to record their public servants serving and protecting them. I'm thinking the officers out there don't want to be recorded doing their best to keep us all safe and happy in the land of the brave. Well Ms Paez is certainly brave. Many thanks. Oh, for you folks who love every cop ever blessed with a badge, don't worry, this Marshal will say he thought it was a weapon and he'll be set free to disrespect other women. If a citizen did this it would be criminal as in Criminal Damage to Property. Funny how that works. If it wasn't for cameras and social media this would have never been addressed. How did the Civil Rights workers prevail?

Mr Rude's keen sense for detail has the reader immersed within the scene every step of the way..."Brand of Justice" is going to create a Brobdingnagian impact in the murder/mystery scene! The plot, one thinks at first is spelled out, until ah-ha! Nope, not what you'd expect...there it went and twisted and turned again. Between the completely enthralling storyline and the truth of the matter of things in law enforcement that no one else but Mr Rude has the guts to reveal, "Brand of Justice" is undeniably, hands-down a must read and you won't put it down til you're done!

The story, with its cataclysmic climax, was pretty extreme, but from reading newspaper headlines about corrupt cops, I know this kind of thing does happen in real life, perhaps not quite so dramatically, but it happens. Author Curt Rude has done a nice job of fictionally describing one "bad cop" scenario.

Look, my stories are disturbing. I take you by the hand and lead you across the blue line to give you a peek at what they are really like. One Reviewer was so disturbed with the names of the officers in this story she renamed them to finish the book. Is the story plausible? Follow the headlines lately and you tell me. The Dark Side of Law Enforcement

This novel is almost like a character study with some of the author’s philosophy thrown in to elaborate more fully what he is saying to the reader. Chimlyn, a hunk of a football player is considered a retard by his friends, but manages to attract one of prettiest girls in high school, Robin, who is a cheer leader. They marry and financially life is a struggle for them, but they are in love and face life realistically. Charles Paul Paullet, has always been a mama’s boy, subject absolutely to her will with a wimp of a father. He is forced to play the piano, but hides his sexual Urge, as he calls it, which rules his life. His mother selects as his wife Agnes, an extremely overweight teenager, whom he can’t stand, but plays the game because of his mother. Agnes has appetite for anything other than food so is unaware of his sexual weakness. Eventually Charles becomes the police chief of Normal and because as a teenager, he always carried his father’s badge, is nicknamed “Badge.” Martin’s mother was an alcoholic and she and he were always getting beat-up by the drunks she dragged home. But he chose to rise above that, became a policeman and married Lacy, an elementary teacher, and they had a good marriage. He was hired as a police officer in Normal under Badge’s supervision.

Throughout the story are events and actions that police are faced with everyday and in this story, the main villain is Badge because of his grotesque sexual hunger. He uses his authority as Police Chief to do whatever it takes to make himself happy and sometimes at the cost of hurting others, especially his underlings. Much of the language in this story is vulgar and although usual to men and teenage boys, in this story seems to be the common verbiage of the men. There are many flashbacks, which are handled nicely, but wherever there has been happiness, the plot stamps it out, leaving depressing impressions. I think the author, who is an ex-law enforcement man, is attempting to tell the reader something that he feels is important to know. I do not think this is a book that would particularly appeal to women, but men would find it interesting.

The Arch Still Stands

So many of you have been under the impression 'The Arch of Utah' took a dive. It didn't, in an attempt to educate, I went and found it while wandering around The West. Many thanks to Shelly, in line with me at Walmart, for this tip.

I watched the video and considered his actions. I hadn't heard about this incident until attached email arrived.

The officer has been identified as Michael Rapiejko. Warren said Rapiejko was put on a standard administrative leave because the incident was considered use of force. The Pima County Attorney's Office cleared Rapiejko of any wrongdoing and he is back on the force, Warren said.

So driving over a suspect armed with a gun is not excessive force.

I Like the fact that this did not come out for several weeks before the investigation was completed

I figure it's deadly force being used to halt the actions of a man not acting rational. He stole a rifle and ammo. He's walking down a street and is either suicidal and/or homicidal and pointing the rifle up under his chin. This could be a ploy to keep the officers at bay until he can kill someone. Rifles, my friends, are a nasty weapon. Officer Rapiejko should be given a special commendation for his: Thinking fast, Making the proper determination regarding how to handle the situation and For saving the mans life. That's right, if this saga would have been allowed to play out, the officers could have gotten in a shoot out. An officer could have been killed. Perhaps the man would have shot himself.

I concur with the last point regarding how the police have an ability to be none responsive with the public.

The man who got ran over is in the soup by-the-way. His attorney doesn't understand how the cops saved her clients' life. I mean . . . Here is living proof that attorneys don't know everything and in some cases, they don't know squat. Oh come now, Cohen-Metzer, are you really this naive or just pretending so as to get your hands on some cash?

All the anguish over Jodi, and the cost of the trial has nothing to do with her. It has everything to do with the players getting fat off the system which lacks any checks and balances. 3.2 million flooded the pockets of our heroes like Juan Martinez.

Now I've been notified by 'The Phoenix Coffee Crew' who have relatives in the Prison System that she plans on getting pregnant by a prison guard so she can afford an appeal. I can't buy it. The system provides her with a taxpayer supported appeal brought to you by the taxpayers. Hey someone has to fatten them lawyers up. They argue for right and wrong, run for office and usually come with expensive tastes. So there you go. Live on in your apathetic existence and continue the hating game. The Court of Public Opinion lives on.

So a big time supporter of the Tulsa PD accidentally shoots a man on the pavement. Hey, sad but true. I've said it over and over on this Blog, 'Police are people, Nobodies perfect . . . thus Police Officers make mistakes.' To me, this looks and feels like a mistake. Now lets switch gears. A deputy responds "[Expletive] your breathe." I'm not so sure this is the time or place for foul language. Secondly, Tulsa Police Sgt Jim Clark states shooting not a crime and did not violate Department Policy. I mean, this Reserve Officer is a big time donor to the PD and is on the Tulsa Department as a Reserve Officer. Really . . . Conflict of Interest anyone? Even if the officer made a mistake how can another officer on the same department make that determination? Is shooting someone accidentally with a firearm and not a taser allowed in the Policy and Procedure Manuel?

Nuts and getting Nuttier . . .

Whadda Ya make of this? Must be a currency exchange deal.

A civilized society must strive to treat all fairly and with the minimal amount of force necessary. Suggesting the Police can and should kill those who do not cooperate with them is unfair to both, the citizens and those sworn to serve and protect them. I can't fathom how some can rationalize that a man, who is not perfect, can be shot to death like this. Would the same standard apply to a 12 year old who has been convicted of shoplifting bubble gum?12 year olds can run faster than Walter Scott. No officer, who does not consider the use of force continuum, is merely doing his/her job. We have standards for our professional law enforcement community. It's what makes them professionals. This was a horrible incident plain and simple and should not of happened.

Readers of this Blog not surprised Police Credibility was going to get hammered by Technology.

Our system of justice is based on the concept of telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Yeah right . . . Mayor Keith Summey has ordered 150 body cams so every officer on the street will have one. Talk about a loss of credibility. Be confusing today playing 'Cops and Robbers'. The good guy was always the kid who had the badge, don't work like that no more.

We've been yammering on about the inevitability of technology catching up to law enforcement, on this Blog, for many months now. Well it happened in a big and unfortunate way. Wasn't much help for Walter Scott. We're learning something from this situation. This incident will be debated because 'The System' can, in no way, sweep it under the rug.

The Court of Public Opinion, Amanda Knox and Officer Slater's Defense Strategy

Police Misconduct + The System + Court of Public Opinion = The Injustice System.

We all seen the shooting. Then the cover-up attempt. We've considered these matters on this Blog long before Walter Scott was gunned down. Near as I can tell, the defense is gonna go like this . . .

Officer Slater feared Scott had something in his hand and thus he had to affect an arrest. He tossed the taser next to the cuffed body to keep an eye on it. Will a Grand Jury be called? Out of political necessity it has to. Will a jury, educated by watching countless episodes of NCIS and Criminal Minds buy it? I'm thinking it's a big-time possibility. So you 'Grand Pardoners of all Things Police', hang in there, he could get off.

The above matter relates to Misconduct and The System. Now this matter has reared its ugly head. The Court of Public Opinion usually based on media accounts. A panel of judges convened and considered the matter of Amanda Knox. The evidence was slip sod, Amanda was brutalized in the media and the Prosecutor should be prosecuted. Anyways . . . I get the following feedback. Call me Stunned and Seething for a reason. Anyways, way to go Amanda! You fought the Injustice System and prevailed.

  Gee Curt...even lawyers and lawmakers with a conscience can't clean up the Criminal Justice System. Nice to put that all on little Amanda's shoulders just because she beat the rap. Her and Casey Anthony should "pal" around with "OJ" and "Robert Blake"....their own little support group.

Officer Slager types aren't mentioned on CSI or Criminal Minds but they show up in Brand of Justice and JusThis!

Think about how jurors are educated, from watching TV or reading John Sanford or CJ Box books. Everyone is indoctrinated into the believe system that cops are the Marshal Dillion's of the world, the good guys who are laying in wait to take a bullet for us. We've been discussing attitudes, the System and how it protects those who protect us, media and The Court of Public Opinion. How cops feel they are above and not of those they serve and protect. This is like the forth shooting in the last couple of months. The cop shot the man 8 times and was thinking fast on his feet. He said the man had grabbed his taser so he quickly tossed it next to Walter Scott.

Then that thing we've been considering on this blog, that thing called technology bared it's fangs of reality. I learned something in all those years of wearing a badge. Lets hope the lesson here for law enforcement isn't to better hide their actions but to be better Cops!

Kinda makes you wonder about: Micheal Brown, Travon Martin, Eric Garner and good old Lt Josey punching the woman in the face. Yes sir, power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely until technology starts delivering disturbing images that change our preconceived notions. Mine were changed a long time ago as evidenced in my stories. Be careful. They're out there.

Uber Cab Driver Threatened by NYPD / Teenagers threatened by Minneapolis Police

Fact: Detective Cherry says 'I don't know what planet f---ing planet your on right now", bangs the side of the car and you get the picture. Oh, he also said something about arresting him but the driver wasn't important enough. Here's the link A Detective at his best. (I hope not.)

A cop source says "It was determined that Cherry was just discourteous." Doesn't it feel kinda like Detective Cherry is committing Disorderly Conduct? (A Criminal Violation)

Fact: Minneapolis Officer Rod Webber tells teenagers on a traffic stop, "F--ck with me, I'll break your leg". An Officer at his best. (I hope not.)

The PD isn't commenting. Is the probable cause for this stop going to be discovered? What was the justification for the search? Why were the boys held for 45 minutes? Can threatening someone with a broken leg be considered an assault? (A Criminal Violation?) If ya love cops, don't worry about it. I pointed out how the system protects itself in JusThis. Webber will be warned and that'll be it. He'll also learn to look for cameras in the future before threatening kids.

The attitude on display by both these officers was detailed in Brand of Justice as follows . . .

“We can make this easy, or we can make this h-a-r-d. I have asked you a simple question and you’ll be so kind to as to start answering. Okay? Or don’t you speak Wyoming?” The officer had slowed his speaking down to a crawl and was lowering his voice with each word. He was putting on skin tight black leather gloves, the kind, without fingers.

Tinkeys’ thoughts on how to be nice had rendered him deaf for the moment. The sudden opening of his door woke him from his fear induced numbness. He was plenty scared all right, but even more, he was bound and determined to catch up to the situation.

           “Who is the RO of this vehicle? I need ID. Registration. Proof of Insurance. C’mon! Let’s go. Let’s not act as stupid as we could be. I don’t wanna repeat myself. Come on, you boys is dumber than a scoop shovel, I swear—let’s kick up some ID, on the double. Any weapons I need to know about in this vee-hick-all? Any bombs, drugs or alcohol? Have you been drinking, boys? Or are you both always deaf and dumb?”

Ray Hinton & David Ranta. The story remains the same.

Fact - It wasn't until last year -- after evidence emerged that Scarcella and Chmil had fabricated evidence and coached witnesses during the trial -- that Ranta was freed. He had spent just over 23 years in a maximum-security prison outside Buffalo. The day he was released, Ranta suffered a heart attack, from which he later recovered.

Fiction (Brand of Justice) “So you hear? That prosecutor done gone and set you up. They, the cops, have it figured Toppan did it. They got all kinds of evidence . . . man. Knife was in the truck, Rogers blood on it, everything. They call that a misprision of justice or something . . . Dub.”

Fact - “When you think you are high and mighty and you are above the law, you don’t have to answer to nobody. But I got news for them, everybody who played a part in sending me to death row, you will answer to God,” Ray Hinton said.

Fiction (JusThis) Corruption is and always has been imbedded into the fabric of governmental systems. When a simple truth is revealed that might be construed as threatening, action is quickly taken to silence the voice of truth. The status quo must be maintained. Words are used to confuse and impede. The reins of power are held tightly in the hands of a few privileged individuals.

Is it Truth or is it, Fiction? You be the judge. I wonder if the players in the system will ever feel remorse? Ray Hinton seems to think so.
